High School Curriculum

Students in grades 9-12 are provided with rigorous coursework that will prepare them for career and college readiness. Throughout all subject areas, our students will be encouraged to consider a variety of ideas, viewpoints, and perspectives that may be useful in finding solutions and alternatives to posed problems. A high priority will be given to teaching students how to reflect on their own learning, as well as recognize and voice when they are not understanding or comprehending the content. Not only will they be taught various student-centered strategies, but they will be encouraged to choose when to apply certain strategies and to share their rationale for doing so. The application of these skills will be monitored and facilitated by the teacher through the use of modeling, questioning, and sentence frames. As students become stronger in the areas of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication the teacher will act as a facilitator as groups collaborate and participate in discussions and hands-on activities.

Academic Subjects

English Language Arts

EEACS’s philosophy of English Language Arts is to explore a curriculum that shows literature and communication as meaningful and relevant to students’ lives. Students are prepared to be avid readers who can think critically, write fluently, communicate clearly, view and use media discriminatingly, and problem solve effectively.

In our English courses, we carefully select literature that aims to stimulate critical thinking and foster a deeper understanding of various themes. As we explore these texts, we acknowledge the maturity levels of our students and strive to create an environment where they can engage with challenging content in a thoughtful manner. The chosen literature may tackle complex social issues, historical contexts, and diverse perspectives. We encourage open dialogue at home about the content to ensure that your child feels supported in navigating the diverse themes presented in their readings. Our goal is to promote intellectual growth and broaden their understanding of the world through literature.

Mathematics

EEACS’s philosophy of Mathematics is to develop critical thinkers who can analyze mathematical concepts and communicate ideas using appropriate terminology and apply their knowledge to real-world situations through the development of knowledge and skills, including facts, concepts, mechanics, fundamental operations and problem-solving skills.

Science

EEACS’s philosophy of Science is to foster an environment where students can attain a broad foundation in science as well as acquire the reasoning and problem-solving skills needed to become responsible and contributing members of society. The curriculum provides students with opportunities to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and informed decision makers. It also provides them with opportunities to experience inquiry-based and content-rich instruction to encourage curiosity, analytical thinking, and authentic learning. In addition, there are opportunities to connect new learning to previous knowledge, other content areas, and to real-world applications. Finally, the courses allow for skill and science concepts to be scientifically literate in order to succeed in a continually changing world.

Social Studies

EEACS’s philosophy of Social Studies is to provide a comprehensive program that engages students and raises civic and global awareness to inspire active and socially responsible citizens through the development of knowledge, which includes facts, concepts and themes in the fields of history, geography, government and civics, economics, and the social and behavioral sciences. Also, the development of skills, which includes research, historical analysis, evaluation, collaboration, communication, and civic participation as well as 21st-century skills such as technology and media literacy.

Business & Computer Technology

EEACS’s philosophy of Business is about offering all students a variety of courses that prepare them to enter the world after graduation with the personal, business, technological and financial skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century. Business classes are for all students, including students interested in pursuing careers in business such as Accounting, Computer Programming, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Management, as well as students interested in entering the workforce immediately upon graduation. They are also for students to develop and advance their skills and interests on a personal and professional level such as Web Page Design, Finance, Multimedia, Desktop Publishing, Computer Animation, and Business Law.

Art

EEACS’s philosophy of Art is to provide a comprehensive exploration of art for all individuals by providing a wide variety of art classes. Through the study, production, and exhibition of art, students discover that art is an integral part of life. Art teaches students to think critically and creatively in an increasingly global and visual society while preparing students for careers and challenges of the 21st century. Art encourages students to relate visual knowledge to other core subjects through problem-solving and creative thinking.

Health & PE

The philosophy of Health and Physical Education is to prepare all students with a variety of diverse movement experiences that will lead to an active and healthy lifestyle.

Health includes the following topics of study: wellness, heart disease, stroke, cancer, accidents first aid, mental health, tobacco, alcohol, CPR, fitness and sexuality.

Physical Education provides a variety of individual and team activities to develop motor skills and social interaction. Life-long cardiovascular fitness and strength development are an integral part of the everyday class.

World Language

EEACS’s philosophy of World Language is to provide a comprehensive program that engages students as active and thoughtful participants in a global society through the development of an understanding of other cultures through the study of history, geography, semantics, and customs. The following skills will be enhanced and developed in the target language: speaking, listening, reading, writing, research, and analysis.
